The Sponsors:

The Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart came to America from Italy in 1865 to answer the call for religious multilingual educators to work with the growing number of immigrant children in New York. From these original three Sisters, both the needs of the community and the numbers of the Sisters grew up apace. Over the next one hundred years the Order founded, staffed and operated fifty one elementary schools, ten high schools, one college, seven business schools, seven day nurseries, four child care institutions, and four adult day care centers.

Largest of these, and perhaps best known, was Saint Joseph’s Home for Children in Peekskill, New York. Founded in 1879, Saint Joseph's staff of Sisters nurtured, educated, and gave loving care to over one thousand boys and girls per year. Sadly, this mission came to an end in 1979 when the city of New York introduced “foster homes”.

Today, the Sisters wish to respond to the mission of service to the Church as they have done in the past. Therefore, they anticipate facing the challenge of a new ministry in this new millennium.
